Effect of Stabilization Exercise on Lumbar Multifidus Muscle Thickness in Patients with Non-specific Chronic Low Back Pain
Authors
Abstract:
Objectives: In a single blinded randomized controlled study, we investigated the effect of stabilization exercise on lumbar multifidus muscle thickness in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain. Low Back Pain is highly prevalent and results in considerable level of disability. Many causes have been associated with weakness or injury of the soft tissues in the lumbar area. Methods: A total of 122 individuals (44 males, 78 females) with non-specific chronic low back pain participated in this study. They were assigned to four different groups. Group 1 received stabilization exercise only. In addition to stabilization exercise, groups 2 and 3 received Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and massage therapy respectively and group 4 was the control group who received drug therapy only. Participants went through this protocol twice weekly for 8 consecutive weeks. Measurement of muscle thickness using Ultrasound scanning machine was done at baseline and end of 8th week. Analysis of variance was used to determine significant difference at P<0.05. Results: There was an increase in the Lumbar Multifidus muscle thickness at L4-L5 lumbar vertebra post-intervention assessment with more increment in group 2 with a mean and standard deviation of 3.28±0.47, within the three groups except the control. Discussion: The study established that stabilization exercise alone and in combination with Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation and massage is effective in increasing the thickness of Lumbar Multifidus muscle in patients with non-specific chronic low back pain.

full textEffect of 8-Week Core Stabilization Exercises on Low Back Pain, Abdominal and Back Muscle Endurance in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain due to Disc Herniation
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of core stabilization exercises on low back pain and abdominal and back muscle endurance in patients with chronic low back pain caused by disc herniation. Methods: For this purpose, 30 male and female patients with chronic low back pain due to disc herniation (age =48.55 ± 3.35) were divided into experimental and control groups (...
full textEffect of exercise on pain, lumbar lordosis angle and movement control in participants with non-specific chronic low back pain: a narrative review
Background and Aim: Non-specific chronic low back pain (LBP) is the most common problem of spinal column disorder and musculoskeletal problems. Many evidence has demonstrated that exercise and corrective exercise is a positive intervention on decrease pain; but according to the relationship between increased lumbar lordosis angle and low back pain; it seems to be very important to implement the...
full textEffectiveness of Kinesiotaping and Conventional Physiotherapy on Patients With Non-Specific Chronic Low Back Pain
Purpose: Low Back Pain (LBP) is among the most common reasons of medical visits worldwide. It can cause limited movements, long lasting disability, and low quality of life and work. Thus, studying the efficacy of conservative treatment strategies to help patients with LBP is very important. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of kinesiotaping in addition to conventional physiotherapy...
full textA comparative study of trunk proprioception between patients with chronic non-specific low back pain and discopathic low back pain
Introduction: Low back pain is one of the most common disorders in modern society. Disturbed properioception can be a possible cause of low back pain and can cause recurrence of low back pain. Previous studies have shown that low back pain reduces proprioception due to instability in the low back. Since the degenerative process of disc herniation is one of the important factors in exacerbating ...
full textThe effect of chronic low back pain on size and contraction of the lumbar multifidus muscle.
Decreases in the size of the multifidus muscle have been consistently documented in people with low back pain. Recently, ultrasound imaging techniques have been used to measure contraction size of the multifidus muscle, via comparison of the thickness of the muscle at rest and on contraction. The aim of this study was to compare both the size (cross-sectional area, CSA) and the ability to volun...
